D.C. United Chief Elected to United Bank Board

Vienna, Va. (December 17, 2001) - At its quarterly meeting on November 20, the Board of Directors of United Bank elected Kevin Payne as a director of the Bank.

Mr. Payne is president of D.C. United, the Washington area's Major League Soccer (MLS) team, and is senior vice president of AEG and managing director of AEG Soccer. AEG is one of the world's largest sports and entertainment companies, with holdings that include the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the L.A. Kings of the NHL, and five MLS teams: D.C. United, L.A. Galaxy, Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, and NY/NJ MetroStars. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of MLS, the Board of Directors of the U.S. Soccer Federation, and serves on the Executive Committee as secretary of the U.S. Soccer Foundation in addition to numerous other professional and community activities.

Mr. Payne, who began his career in broadcast news, became the national administrator for the U.S. Soccer Federation in 1989 and later became its president. He left the U.S.S.F. to become executive vice president of sales and marketing of Soccer USA Partners, which staged more than 60 U.S. national team matches. In 1994, Payne put together the original investment group for D.C. United, and has served as president and general manager since its inception.

D.C. United has been the most successful team in the MLS both on and off the field, winning six major championships and leading the league in attendance.
